Sharp on the heels of their debut single for the Jade Tree label, that Philadelphia super trio Dark Blue consisting of John Sharkey III (Clockcleaner, Puerto Rico Flowers) Andrew Mackie Nelson (Ceremony, Paint it Black, Puerto Rico Flowers) and Mike Sneeringer (Strand of Oaks, formerly from Purling Hiss, Puerto Rico Flowers) deliver the goods to the label in the form of their first full length; the eight song ‘Pure Reality’. Recorded and produced by Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Sunny Day in Glasgow, Nothing).

‘Pure Reality’ began life while band leader Sharkey was working as a nightwatchman in Canberra, Australia. ‘I refused to allow myself to get on the graveyard sleep schedule, so I would walk around in a shot-nerves psychosis every night patrolling a desolate university campus in north Canberra. A good portion of these songs were written in this walking coma at 4am under the cold ACT moon. Alone and to be quite honest, comfortably beleaguered.’

Jump ahead two years later and we find Sharkey returning to his hometown of Philadelphia to spiral into a highly disheartening culture shock; the fuel that makes the raging though austere songs that make up ‘Pure Reality’ what they are. ‘Being thrust back into this fucking intellectual ghetto after a few years in solitude with some smart people has really done a number on my head. I hate my job, I detest my neighborhood and my neighbors. But this is the city that made me and I am forever grateful. Life is great then its shit, then it’s fine and back again until it's done. I long to get back to a great part of my life.’

Musically, it retains the same grandiose delivery and burly, wide open guitar sound that was found on the earlier release by such U.K 80’s bands as The Comsat Angels, The Stone Roses, Blitz and Australia’s The Church. The combination of Dark Blue’s sweeping, majestic sound and the deep desperation found in Sharkey’s voice and lyrics is something that is matchless, harrowing and unrelenting. In other words, it’s ‘Pure Reality’.

Led by that charismatic crooner of an international sports enthusiast John Sharkey III (Clockcleaner, Puerto Rico Flowers) and backed by Andrew Mackie Nelson (Ceremony, Paint it Black, Puerto Rico Flowers) and Mike Sneeringer (formerly from Purling Hiss, Puerto Rico Flowers), the Philadelphian super group Dark Blue serve up two fistfuls of velvet lined vitriol for the terrace chanting masses on their debut single for the Jade Tree label. The A Side, Just Another Night With The Boys - an ode to an evening of soccer hooliganism - sonically harkens back to a time in the early 80s when U.K. boot boy bands such as Blitz and Angelic Upstarts shied away from their rough 'n' tumble comfort zone to cover Joy Division and Bowie tunes. The flip is a somewhat faithful rendering of 'Hungry for Love', the opener from John Cale’s confounding and obscure-as-hell 1984 'beach pop' album Caribbean Sunset. These two tracks recorded by noted Philadelphian producer Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Purling Hiss) are here to whet your appetite for the forthcoming Jade Tree full length. Bon appetit!

The Beast Keeps Cool

Release Date: September 9, 2014

Those who know Evan Patterson from the aggressive throb he deals as the front man of Louisville’s Young Widows might be taken aback by his singer-songwriter alter ego Jaye Jayle. There is no cocksure swagger or the aggressive walls of guitar the band is known for anywhere on either side of this solo single. Instead, you get the A Side “The Beast Keeps Cool”, a late night burner of a track that ties together the simple, synthetic swiggles and pulses of 60’s electronic mavericks the Silver Apples with the straight ahead strum and bang of a Velvet Underground jam while the B Side “It’s Jayle Time” comes off like the soundtrack to an unmade psychedelic spaghetti western where an outlaw with a heart of gold rides into town to settle a score and maybe score a little peyote. Jaye Jayle is a one way trip into the loner zone occupied by the likes of Neil Young, Fred Neil, Vernon Wray and many other introverted souls. Do yourself a favor and grab a ticket for the ride.

In 1994, underground music was dirty, stained with self-loathing and doubt. Losers ruled and the dirge of the Northwest had crept into the mainstream. It was an era that inspired two young girls to pursue an unforgiving future in punk rock. But with a taste for underground comix, junk food and all things low brow,Slutever owe as much to Beavis and Butthead as they do to Kurt and Courtney. These self described brat punks make their Jade Tree debut with this two-song dark and fuzz-filled 7”.

Each record in the series features two alternate versions of Hause originals and two covers of songs from the label’s catalog. The title track “Heavy Heart” and Rankers & Rotters” are followed by Dave Hause’s renditions of The Promise Ring’s “Skips a Beat (Over You)” and Jets to Brazil’s “Psalm” on the B side. Though this is Dave first solo release for Jade tree, he is very much a part of the label's family – first playing guitar on Paint It Black’s debut album CVA and then releasing the self titled debut EP by his three piece, The Loved Ones.

With only a hard to find cassette demo, one sold out 7”, a smattering of blog posts and some messageboard banter in their wake, Philadelphia’s Leather have just begun to emerge from an existence unknown to all but those “in the know.” Sterile is surely not the first adjective that crosses one’s mind when confronted with the noisy hardcore on this 4 song EP, aptly described by compatriot and Clockcleaner frontman John Sharkey as the likely result “...if Tad Doyle had owned Age Of Quarrel and actually listened to it.” It’s safe to say that picking up this vinyl will mean reliving these ten minutes hundreds of times over while waiting for the next recorded dose or a chance to witness a live show (likely to be in a dilapidated warehouse or a basement as grimy as their sound).

Listeners will appreciate the warning shot before the full-length Lost Art, leaves them with a throbbing, euphoric bruise that defies the cookie-cutter punk 'n roll mould. From Barth's winding guitars and Mazzola's burr-throated bellow, punk's signature urgency crashes into a mid-tempo rock swagger pumping the best of forebears like Hot Snakes, Circle Jerks and The Avengers.

Is it punk? Hardcore? Garage? Make up your own mind about Cloak/Dagger’s latest full-length, Lost Art.

Colin Barth’s winding guitars juggle melody, punch and vitriol on par with the Avengers, John Reis, Mission of Burma and Greg Ginn. Play it loud on tracks such as “Deathbed Rebels” that push the punk envelope a bit further with frenzied, circle-pit fodder reminiscent of the Circle Jerks and Big Boys.
Underneath, snaking rolls of bass drive the proceedings with the flawless percussive thrust of the Ramones, Hot Snakes and bygone Boston hardcore heroes F.U.s, Jerry’s Kids. Over this Jason Mazzola distinguishes the band with a full, arching tenor that’s more bellow than scream. Mazzola’s delivery and lyrics shine especially on numbers like “Lower Eastada” and “Dead Idols,” where the band’s punk ‘n roll swagger takes over (think more Johnny Thunders, less Ray Cappo). After listening to Lost Art, you won’t be worried about categorizing the band, only when they go back on tour.

Richmond’s CLOAK/DAGGER return to burn through two more of their signature anthems to alienation on this 7 inch. The Swiz and Jehu references still ring true, but the Daggers have solidified their own sound and forged on. “Surf Song” resonates with anyone estranged by the detachment of the modern technological era (and maybe some geographically challenged would be surfers). On the flip, “Concentration Camps” gives us the tender side of CLOAK/DAGGER with brooding on the frustration of an infatuation-based attention deficit disorder. “Real life is not much fun” according to CLOAK/DAGGER, but with a single like this added to the mix, we beg to differ.

Release Date: February 19, 2008

PAINT IT BLACK’s New Lexicon was not easy to produce, but it’s gritty, thunderous and ugly—just the way hardcore punk should be.

New Lexicon marks PAINT IT BLACK’s first recording with new drummer Jared Shavelson (Hope Conspiracy, None More Black) and boasts guest vocals from Jeff Pezatti (Naked Raygun). Still, many of the best surprises occur behind the scenes.

Rather than straining to re-create “lo-fi” in a studio, New Lexicon rings in an aggressive clarity from engineer J. Robbins’ (Modern Life is War, Against Me!). With a thick low-end up front (think Bad Brains’ Roir sessions), New Lexicon says that aggression doesn’t have to be found only in thick guitars.

From here, the album was passed on to co-producer Oktopus of the indie hip hop group Dalek. Here, the existing sounds of feedback, bass booms and cymbal crashes were twisted into haunting ambient interludes and serpentine waves trailing behind the buzz saw riffs.

With little debate, this is Paint It Black’s finest hour …or, half-hour, anyway, with 15 songs clocking in at a dizzying 30 minutes, 26 seconds.

LP available from Rivalry Records.

On their debut full length release for Jade Tree, CLOAK/DAGGER keep it fast and simple. Produced and recorded at Headbanging Kill Your Mama Music Studios by Chris Owens (Lords), We Are is a bombastic, rough around the edges approach to minimalist hardcore. Combining the jagged aggression of bands like Swiz and Black Flag with the spastic urgency of Drive Like Jehu, We Are CLOAK/DAGGER embraces a lyrically raw directness that transcends the false conceptions and misgivings of modern punk, offering up honest commentary on the balance between life both with and without excess. In the end, We Are CLOAK/DAGGER embraces the long lost art of disposability, steering away from the culture of celebratory fake aggression, into a new era of raw, incendiary punk music.

Vinyl will be released on Kiss of Death Records in the US and Rat Patrol Records in the UK.

Delivered over NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD's enraged brand of melodic hardcore, the three original tracks present succinct attacks on the current presidential administration and poverty, while the two covers offer a glimpse into New Mexican Disaster Squad's '80s hardcore influences (namely Government Issue and 7 Seconds.)

Cast through shades of indignant but energetic punk, Peace With Nothing serves as a culmination of the band's allegiance to a simpler time in hardcore, while still maintaining a refreshed sense of insanity, urgency and the band's crucial heritage as a vehicle for change in punk.

The three members of YOUNG WIDOWS emerged from the dissolution of BREATHER RESIST with a new vision steeped in dark, brooding grooves and moody post-punk. From the reverb-drenched inspiration of Regulator Watts/Hoover to the bass and drums lock-groove perfected by Shellac and the Jesus Lizard, YOUNG WIDOWS gladly wears influences on its sleeve. The signature inventive guitar work of vocalist/guitarist Evan Patterson (Black Cross, The National Acrobat) is at its peak here, while the rhythm section of Nick Thieneman and Geoff Paton lays down syrup-thick grooves, recalling Pacific Northwest heavyweights (think Melvins, Karp, even Nirvana), and British post-punk, ala Gang Of Four. Long known for favoring the EP format over the full-length, Toronto's FUCKED UP makes its Jade Tree debut with the two-song Triumph of Life seven inch. Although the six-minute title track appears on the group's forthcoming long-player, Hidden World, this highly anticipated EP offers a completely different studio version. Decidedly more raw than its full-length counterpart, the version found here crackles, hisses, thunders and booms with all the chaos of the band's legendary live shows-only listening to the seven inch, there's no ink-stamp smear left on your hand later. With only two songs, FUCKED UP solidifies its reputation as "the second coming of punk" (thank you Maximum Rock ‘n Roll): a band very much doing its own thing, in spite of the underground's many trends and pigeonholes. The comparatively shorter “Neat Parts” makes sure not to skimp, getting the job done quickly, and leaving listeners winded. Breaking the usual punk-song-time-limit barrier, Triumph of Life is an epic, multifarious track that roars through every expectation. Melodic, anthemic guitar lines and a driving rhythm section batter listeners alongside some of hardcore's most ferocious and truly jarring vocals.

Hailing from Abilene, Texas, HINSON’S introductory EP, The Baby and the Satellite, animates the emptiness of backcountry roads and late-teenage displacement. HINSON’s distinct brand of country-noir is delivered over hushed vocals and subdued guitars, shaded by fragments of Dylan’s storytelling and Bill Callahan’s (Smog) ability to tap into the darker emotions of real life. The Baby and the Satellite is an endearing journey through HINSON’S fractured past, searching for signs of hope in the somber halls of a downtrodden Middle America.

After the huge crossover success of 2002's Control (JT1072), it was only a matter of time before David Bazan and company would fully realize their potential swansong. Beautifully achieved, Achilles' Heel (JT1095) is crafted as a scathing glance into the crosshairs of the American dream, a heartbreaking sketch of husbandhood and ultimately an exploration of faith as told through eleven perfectly textured vignettes. As sonically mature as it is emotionally complex, Achilles' Heel is imbued with the hopeful sadness that only PEDRO THE LION can, and do deliver.

There's still only two of them, but this time, EUPHONE bring in a slew of talented guests to augment their unpredictable combination of dub, jazz, rock, electro, and fusion. Count in Chicago friends like Jeremy Jacobsen (The Lonesome Organist, Five Style), Tim Kinsella (Joan Of Arc), and Dan Bitney (Isotope 217, Tortoise) for some spice, but leave it to primary members Ryan Rapsys and Nick Macri to execute the recipe. From horns to synths to Ryan's first-ever vocal, there's hardly a musical hurdle these guys are unwilling to leap.

After ten years and fifty records, we thought it was only right that we pay homage to our earliest releases. These eleven 7-inch singles came out at a time when our mailorder catalog was still a xeroxed one-sheet and our website was still rumination for science fiction fodder. They were issued with very little fanfare, but loads of love. So with that, we thank GRAVEL, JONES VERY, RAILHED, PITCHBLENDE, EGGS, LESLIE, UNIVERSAL ORDER OF ARMAGEDDON, WALLEYE, and EDSEL - brought together for the first time on this 35-song double CD, and yours for the price of one.

Following a critically acclaimed debut album for Made In Mexico, singer/songwriter David Bazan returned to his Seattle home studio to craft the bulk of Winners Never Quit - a haunted collection of new material that traces the fictional story of a man who vows to maintain his good name despite a slew of devious activity and malicious intent. Stripped down to a voice and a guitar, Bazan is a modern-day folk champion. Behind a band, he loses his timidity and commands attention with an impassioned voice and a compelling narrative. Forgive us for taking it upon ourselves. (Also available as part of Jade Tree's retrospective CD, The First Five Years (JT1050)

Very few anthology compilations can hold a candle to this one. SWIZ blazed a path for future post-punk flag-wavers in only 32 songs and a handful of records, and here, for the first time ever in one place, even the most glutted hardcore completists will find something to celebrate. Elaborate packaging by SWIZ guitarist and respected graphic designer Jason Farrell, countless photos, complete lyrics, and of course, all of the band's classic recordings on one disc. Absolutely essential.

PITHCHBLENDE signaled the onset of an art-punk explosion in Washington D.C. and this EP was a powerful primer to the sound. Sonic modulation, guitar interplay and improvisation, nontraditional song structure, and stream of consciousness lyrical output from a man whose Driver's License proves his name really is Treiops Treyfid only touch the tip of this complex iceberg (Also available as part of Jade Tree's retrospective CD, The First Five Years (JT1050

They rocked basement shows, Midwest festivals, and sundry juice joints alike, and for a while, it seemed like everyone had their logo silk-screened on something, so it's no wonder why RAILHED'S introspective and endearing brand of melodic hardcore still manages to resonate in the hearts of anyone who hears them for the first time. And we're not just saying that because Jade Tree's own Darren Walters shred his vocal chords for this band. Honest. Hardcore trainspotters might recognize Vic Bondi as the fast and furious frontman for the legendary Articles of Faith or as the mature and comparatively subdued voice behind Alloy. In JONES VERY, Bondi is a multifaceted character weaving between the two with both dexterous restraint and unchecked passion, inadvertently creating one of the best records you've probably never heard.

Long before the letter E stood for a three-letter curse word that some of your favorite bands still can't manage to utter, it stood for EIDOLON - a Boston-based group that was blending hardcore aesthetics with a pop sensibility years before the rest of the world caught on. It's not too late to catch up.

Somewhere in the middle of cementing their place as one of Washington D.C.'s most revered and seminal artists, SWIZ managed to churn out this EP for Jade Tree as their final output. And what a way to go. Raspy, abrasive, chaotic post-punk from the Capitol City - the kind that made them famous, only with Dave.

Our first ever release is more than just a trip down memory lane; it's a politically charged collection of hardcore punk anthems whose relevance never seems to dissipate, even ten years later. There are hundreds of records that "you had to be there" for, but this isn't one of them. Recently licensed by Day After Records, vinyl is once again available for this classic.
