Pitchfork’s Ian Cohen and Patrick Fallon of have put together a list of their less obvious favorites from Jade Tree’s catalog. It’s a nice list that manages to include a few of the unsung heroes from the label’s catalog.
Jade Tree’s entire catalog is now available on Bandcamp. Those eager to sample the upcoming Dark Blue single or dip into the extensive catalog for a dose of Lifetime, Pedro the Lion, The Promise Ring, Fucked Up, Kid Dynamite, Strike Anywhere, Jets to Brazil, Joan of Arc and more should head over to jadetree.bandcamp.com and stream or purchase them for a mere $5 for LPs, $4 for EPs and $2 singles.
As a high schooler in the late ’90s, the punk-aligned but never pigeonholed label Jade Tree loomed large in my world. So imagine my excitement last week when a report said the label had returned from a hiatus I wasn’t aware of. After reaching out to the label’s heads, however, I found out that that wasn’t the case. At all. Here, Darren Walters explains how his artful label has weathered the beating that the new music industry paradigm gave his label.
Led by that charismatic crooner of an international sports enthusiast John Sharkey III (Clockcleaner, Puerto Rico Flowers) and backed by Andrew Mackie Nelson (Ceremony, Paint it Black, Puerto Rico Flowers) and Mike Sneeringer (formerly from Purling Hiss, Puerto Rico Flowers), the Philadelphian super group Dark Blue serve up two fistfuls of velvet lined vitriol for the terrace chanting masses on their debut single for the Jade Tree label. The A Side, Just Another Night With The Boys – an ode to an evening of soccer hooliganism – sonically harkens back to a time in the early 80s when U.K. boot boy bands such as Blitz and Angelic Upstarts shied away from their rough ‘n’ tumble comfort zone to cover Joy Division and Bowie tunes. The flip is a somewhat faithful rendering of ‘Hungry for Love’, the opener from John Cale’s confounding and obscure-as-hell 1984 ‘beach pop’ album Caribbean Sunset. These two tracks recorded by noted Philadelphian producer Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Purling Hiss) are here to whet your appetite for the forthcoming Jade Tree full length. Bon appetit!

Paint it Black can be pretty elusive these days, but if you’re in the right place at the right time, you might be lucky enough to catch Dr. Dan and crew in their natural habitat. Check out this batch of photos from PIBs recent Noisey show with Hop Along, Night Birds, and Bad Canoes in Brooklyn.
