Peace With Nothing

Featuring a collection of five unreleased NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD songs, Peace With Nothing is a digital-only EP to be released on June 5th that compiles three original tracks and two covers that fall close to the Orlando, Florida band’s influential origins.

Vinyl will be released on in the US and in the UK.

Delivered over NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD‘s enraged brand of melodic hardcore, the three original tracks present succinct attacks on the current presidential administration and poverty, while the two covers offer a glimpse into New Mexican Disaster Squad’s ’80s hardcore influences (namely Government Issue and 7 Seconds.)

Cast through shades of indignant but energetic punk, Peace With Nothing serves as a culmination of the band’s allegiance to a simpler time in hardcore, while still maintaining a refreshed sense of insanity, urgency and the band’s crucial heritage as a vehicle for change in punk.

Don’t Believe

Witness the new sound of hardcore on Don’t Believe, the third album from punkers NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD – their first for Jade Tree. The band has been hiding in the weeds of their home sweet hellhole of Orlando, FL, just honing their modern melodic anthems and delivering pizza since 1999. Now they’re ready to turn their rage loose on the unsuspecting masses. The 14 songs on Don’t Believe blaze by in a fury of blue-collar triumph, creating a ferocious new sound still firmly rooted in the school of their 80s hardcore heroes like Dag Nasty, Minor Threat and Black Flag.

New Mexican Disaster Squad have just informed us that they will be getting together to play "Rad Fest" next May.

Here is the statement from the band:

"So maybe calling it a "hiatus" would probably have been a better move (as this will take place only a year and a half after our official last show), but the four of us have decided to play a one-off show at Rad Fest in Wilmington, North Carolina this coming May (14th and 15th). Don’t get us wrong, No Friends is our hardcore band now and Virgins and Gatorface are still going to be releasing shit and playing shows. However, we’re all still great friends and saw this festival as an excellent chance to dust-off and bash-out the songs that were such an important part of our lives for almost 10 years. Don’t expect any tours or new records. We’re not planning on doing any other one-off shows either. Basically if we feel like playing, we will, and we want to right now. This is going to be a really great punk festival in a cool city with a great lineup of bands and thats the main reason we are doing this. Now that all the technical mumbo jumbo is out of the way, we can’t wait to see all of your sweaty, smiling faces in Wilmington NC in May!"

The band released the Peace With Nothing EP in 2007.

The band had this to say about the situation:

"After almost ten years of NMDS there seems to be no more dead horse left to kick. We will be playing a pre-Fest show in Tampa on October 29th, and The FEST itself looks like it will be our final show as NMDS. Thanx to everyone that have been rad over the years. You know who you are."

"On a couple of positive notes, there are no hard feelings between any of us, and we have our new bands GATORFACE and VIRGINS both releasing shit this year. There is also a new project in the works with a certain sadistic magician that hopefully some of you will be stoked about."

Last year, the band released the Peace With Nothing EP which is still available on 7" and digital download.

NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD [I]DON’T BELIEVE[/I] REVIEW

Nothing irritates me more these days than the bastardization of hardcore. The genre has seemingly sucked in the metal/noise/grind sub-cores much like its skinnier, better looking cousin “indie rock” did with emo and punk a couple years back. What is deemed “hardcore” in today’s scene is anything but what the 80s DC scene was churning at out its peak.

New Mexican Disaster Squad is a throwback to that DC era sound. They’re snotty, brash, and play their instruments at full speed on Don’t Believe. Showing true hardcore spirit, most tracks never eclipse the two minute mark before fading out (they actually fade). In spite of all this, NMDS have managed to maintain a melody and rhythm to their work. Making Don’t Believe accessible to more than just your friend with the X tattoo on his ankle. Don’t mistake melody for weakness, as the band knows their roots and sticks closely enough to them.

The strength of bands from that DC era was in their lyrics. Good hardcore always comes with a message or two about anti-authority and vocalist Sam Johnson and crew know how to deliver. Oft political, Johnson angrily spits about everything from military recruiting practices on “The Killing Machine” to mass media hypocrisy on “Cast No Shadows”.

It’s not metal. It’s not grind. It’s not emocore. It’s hardcore. Ironic how something so heavily influenced by music made 20 years ago can sound so fresh.

Ian MacKaye could kick my ass: “Bullshit Detector”, “The Killing Machine”

Dischord is my favorite chord: Black Cross, Kid Dynamite, Hit the Switch

NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD [I]DON’T BELIEVE[/I] REVIEW

There are a lot of things it’s really tough to believe in these days: Professional wrestling, the White House’s credibility, email-marketed penis-enlargement techniques. The list goes on and on and on.

Some people might add punk rock to that list, but that’s only because they don’t know where to look. Sure an avalanche of almost comically inept acts have turned punk into a teen lifestyle-marketing campaign ripe for the picking, but there are still a few acts here and there that aren’t hung up on MySpace fashions or equally wanky street-grime-gutter-rawk idiocy. With Don’t Believe, New Mexican Disaster Squad establishes itself as an act in which you can place your faith. It’s not the sort of religious zeal faith that acts such as Fugazi, The Clash or Ani DiFranco, but New Mexican Disaster Squad still knows a thing or two about the three-chord stomp.

So the band’s name is a little misleading. It’s not a disaster squad from New Mexico. It’s not even a freshly formed disaster squad out of old Mexico. It comes from Orlando and offers no explanation for its name, mostly because it’s too busy kicking your head in. Busting through 14 songs in a little more than 28 minutes, NMDS cuts a hearty dose of classic SST punk rock with liberal helpings of vintage Lifetime melodies and a few chunks of Floridian hard stuff. With that kind of pedigree, New Mexican Disaster Squad doesn’t have much room for variety: “9 Kinds of Hell,” “Wasting Matches” and “Destroy at All Cost” are simple, searing punk anthems that draw a line in the sand: Either you get Don’t Believe on its first listen or you’re out of reach.

Either way is okay for Mew Mexican Disaster Squad, as this album’s not about making friends or establishing a spot in the scene. It’s about punk rock, pure and simple. With the world full of unreliables – gas prices, middle-east instability and Paris Hilton’s next sex scandal – it’s reassuring to know there’s still a few punk bands upon which you can still depend.

NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD "DON"T BELIEVE" CD (JT1112) OUT TODAY

Warning: implode() [function.implode]: Invalid arguments passed in /home/jadetree/public_html/news/wp-content/plugins/extension-bbcode/Extension BBcode Bata.php on line 156

Jade Tree brings down the hammer today with Don’t Believe, the new album from punkers NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD. The band has been hiding in the weeds of their home sweet hellhole of Orlando, FL, just honing their modern melodic anthems and delivering pizza since 1999. Now they’re ready to turn their rage loose on the unsuspecting masses. The 14 songs on Don’t Believe blaze by in a fury of blue-collar triumph, creating a ferocious new sound that’s still firmly rooted in the school of their 80s hardcore heroes like Dag Nasty, Minor Threat and Black Flag.

The band is on the road right now with fellow Tree people LORDS so turn off your computer and soak up some stale air at the Southeast punk venue of your choice.

We know May might still seem like it’s quite a ways off, but you won’t have to wait until then to get a taste of NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD. The band will be hitting the road tomorrow and will be out and about in the South and on the East coast playing shows for the next few weeks with Western Addiction and None More Black.

Each will include a free poster and two New Mexican Disaster Squad buttons.

NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD [I]DON’T BELIEVE[/I] REVIEW

Before I write about this actual release, I feel the need to mention that the CD version of Don’t Believe was released by Jade Tree. I just bought the vinyl version because No Idea was having a super cheap sale.

A lot of bands seem to have been studying the Kid Dynamite handbook before writing their songs. Some friends of mine are getting a little fed up with the carbon copy hero worship (not me, however, as I’d rather have bands taking influence from this style than a lot of others out there….plus, these bands do the genre justice), but I bet they’d enjoy New Mexican Disaster Squad, who add some ferocious hardcore and draw out their songs a bit more. NMDS take influences from Strike Anywhere, Paint it Black, old punk bands and the already mentioned Kid Dynamite, turning them into a style that is their own. Their music is a bit on the sloppy side, which gives it a real punk rock authenticity. There are some songs that need some fine tuning, but Don’t Believe is a pretty damn solid album all around. Fans of melodic punk rejoice, as a new band has joined ship to grace your eardrums.

The Set List: My Picks for This Week

"New Mexican Disaster Squad , Western Addiction and Monikers – Sunday, The Social. Having recently been signed to Jade Tree Records, deserving local hardcore band NMDS is Orlando’s latest success story. Rounded out by Western Addiction’s charged, ills-of-society brand of hardcore and Monikers’ scrap-ass garage punk, this should be full-tilt show."

On May 9th, Jade Tree is bringing down the hammer with Don’t Believe, the new album from punkers NEW MEXICAN DISASTER SQUAD.
