Lords Swords Review

Listening to Lords is like getting hit in the face with a rock and wanting more because the sound is catchy. Fast, raw, and intense, their Jade Tree debut has the guts and energy to keep their thrash-y, rock ?°»n’ roll sound fresh and fun even if a tad familiar.

Just under 20 minutes, Swords is a non-stop clash of flailing guitar riffs, throaty screams, and enough throttling drumbeats to make your head pound nails. The only breather comes when it’s all over, and then it needs to be repeated. No signs of 4/4 time anywhere on this thing, and it sounds like their playing hard enough to start fires. These Kentucky boys probably couldn’t part with their Allman Brothers records when they discovered Napalm Death too because Swords melds enough southern rock swagger to keep it from being another ride on the grindcore wagon.

There are a slew of math-metal/punk bands out there, and it’s easy for Lords to get lost in the heap. Eschewing choruses for patchy time signatures is nothing new, but Lords pull it off dazzlingly well, and unlike a lot of bands, they know when the energy dies and the rage sounds fake—keeping it all short and to the point. Swords is worth a search though the pile.

Lords Swords Review

I admit, the rhyming of bandname and album title made me chuckle, but I was a little bit disappointed that this was not a new album by 80′s porn-icon Traci Lords, maybe one she recorded while doing kinky stuff with swords. But no matter how disappointed I was by the lack of porn, the album itself didn’t let me down in any way. Lords play a pretty insane kind of hardcore-driven rock ‘n roll, and that’s probably the best description I can come up with. It’s nothing that really sticks to the brain, but it sure as hell gets your head bobbin’.

Score: 7

Jade Tree is thrilled to announce the addition of Kentucky’s LORDS to our ever growing roster. The bands debut full length Swords, due out August 9th, combines the “get in the van” urgency of a forgotten era of SST influenced punk rock with an awe-inspiring precision and swagger of late 80’s American thrash metal. The heir apparent to the throne of the resurgent Louisville hardcore scene, Lords deliver their unique brand of volatile thrash in a blaze of towering riffs, near heretical rants and throttling drums.

Somehow LORDS cram a punishing wall of sound into an inconceivable 13 song, 20 minute long package. Swords is a torrid and unrelenting assault that will leave a trail of scorched earth in its path. The band will be on the road for much of the summer before joining Poison The Well for a full fall tour.

Each customer will be entered into a drawing for a $50 iTunes Gift Certificate. (US, UK and Canadian residents only)
