JADE TREE BANDS ON THE RUN

Ahh it’s that time of year again: The cold frost of winter begins to melt away, birds greet the morning with their glorious song, and the smell of fresh flowers is err…completely overshadowed by the stank of some touring band’s van parked in your driveway. Yes after SXSW everyone hits the road and Jade Tree has upward of 8 bands sweating the country and beyond over the next few months. STRIKE ANYWHERE hit Japan and Australia, THE LOVED ONES and THE EXPLOSION will be sharing the stage for much of May, BREATHER RESIST are headed out with noise-monkeys Melt Banana, PAINT IT BLACK will be slaying the West Coast with FROM ASHES RISE before getting all European, and THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES will be joining Underoath for what promises to be one of the bigger tours of the year. Hot damn. Get out your flip-flops and soak it up kids, Spring has arrived!

Please consult the for current dates.

SXSW WRAP UP

Oh what a week it was last week! Jade Tree conquered this year’s annual SXSW in Austin, TX with tons of partying, hijinx, and rocking and rolling sets by the cream of the JT crop.

Night one, which featured STATISTICS, ESTER DRANG, and PEDRO THE LION, was held in conjunction with , and was the perfect show to start off the JT SXSW experience. It proved that you don’t have to be loud and heavy to knock people’s socks off.

Night two was a partnership with , which saw THE LOVED ONES, BREATHER RESIST, FROM ASHES RISE, and THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES blowing attendees freaking minds with aurally numbing sets.

Overall, JT bands had a presence throughout, with bands like PEDRO, STATS, and TAAS playing more than once and making the most of their 15 hour plus drives and other assorted band members drunkenly stumbling from one show or BBQ to another. You get the ideas-lots of beer, lots of fun, lots of .

TAIN’T NO PARTY LIKE A TEXAS PARTY.

It’s the final warning before the BBQ explosion of SXSW hits. All this week the entire staff (minus one flu ridden office manager) and most of our roster will be getting all kinds of surly in and around Austin, TX.

We’ve got showcases galore.

Firstly we’re getting up with the peeps at Touch & Go for a killer show at Red Eyed Fly. A little PEDRO THE LION, maybe garnished with some ESTER DRANG hot sauce and dab of STATISTICS to offer up a delicious evening of indie-rock.

Maybe you like you dishes a little rougher around the edges; well the following day we hook up with Fat Wreck at Emo’s Annex for some sloshed up mayhem via THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES coupled with blistering sets from BREATHER RESIST, FROM ASHES RISE, and THE LOVED ONES.

Feel it!

STRIKE ANYWHERE GET ALL ACOUSTICAL

STRIKE ANYWHERE, having just finished a hearty east coast tour with label mates THE LOVED ONES, are now planning the rest of 2005. The band’s highly moshable odds & ends collection To Live In Discontent (JT1101) has been flying off the shelves since it’s late January release and in order to celebrate the band is going to try and enter Japan again – after last year’s Exit English the boys headed off to Japan and Australia with Jade Tree co-owner Darren Walters, only to be stopped at the gate, arrested, and held for questioning before being denied entrance – fingers crossed and knock on wood that the same doesn’t occurred this trip.

While the rest of us wait for further stateside touring news, you can always visit the band’s and stream an acoustic 3 song radio show taped for local Richmond, VA station, Y101.

Please consult the Strike Anywhere for current dates.

STATISTICS AND ESTER DRANG IN THE STUDIO

In the "things to look forward to in 2005" department, both Omaha’s STATISTICS and the Oklahoma men of ESTER DRANG are headed into the studio to work on new records.

Denver Dalley is currently with AJ Mogis working on the tracks for his follow up to Leave Your Name LP/CD (JT1091). While ESTER DRANG will be prepping their answer to Infinite Keys CD (JT1082) by dropping into John Vanderslice’s this February for some recording before going in with Scott Solter (Spoon, Court and Spark, For Stars) to finish up at his 15th Street Studios.

More new will be posted as it becomes available.

Update from Jade Tree Records

The iTunes music store has released Pedro the Lion’s exclusive Stations EP. The downloadable record features radio versions of an assortment of Pedro the Lion hits including songs off of the band’s recent Jade Tree full-length Achilles Heel, plus tracks like "Big Trucks" off of the group’s watershed It’s Hard to Find A Friend. In other Pedro the Lion news, the band has just announced dates throughout January with Earlimart and a full tour with recent Sub Pop signees Low to round out February and March.
• Produced by Brian Mcternan (Thrice, Hot Water Music, Strike Anywhere) The Loved Ones’ self-titled debut is a raucous exercise in razor-throated punk classics, a earnest mix of colossal hooks and ferocious energy. Owing as much to the mile-a-minute, whiskey slugging styling of Dillinger Four as the smarmy and cocksure swagger of early Elvis Costello, The Loved Ones offers a glimpse into the tracks that will surely launch the band from the northeast basement circuit and into the pop public idiom — the Philly-based band has just stepped off the road with Against Me! and The Bouncing Souls and is gearing up for a hectic 2005 including dates with labelmates Strike Anywhere.
• On the cusp of the March release of the group’s J. Robbins (The Promise Ring, Jets To Brazil) produced Paradise, Paint it Black is planning its world domination schedule. First From Ashes Rise dropped a shocker on last month with its entrance onto the My Space scene, now the boys in Paint it Black find themselves following suit by dropping a kick ass page of their own. So while you wait for the new disk to drop feel free to head over to their page, stream upcoming tracks, make comment on David Wagenschutz’s impressive diversity in hair cuts, and most importantly gossip with fellow Paint it Black fans about what promises to be one of the most candid and vital records of 2005.
• Katie Knoll, former administrative program associate for Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU), along with the members of Strike Anywhere, The Locust, The Blood Brothers, and Andrew W.K. have partnered up to help spread the word about Planned Parenthood and its services. The organization and its affiliates have been stationed at various punk shows throughout the year distributing health information and connecting with a seemingly divergent audience. Says Knoll, "A large percentage of the audience is composed of young men [and] It’s great to reach [them], because they don’t usually go to health fairs and they now know that their favorite bands are pro-choice."
• These Arms Are Snakes has recently returned from the road after a month plus jaunt around the country with the noisy bastards in Isis. Still hot on the heels of the band’s painfully potent Oxeneers… the band was only home for a few days before getting nominated for a prestigious PLUG Independent Music Award in the Punk Rock Album Of The Year category. Phase 1 is complete and fans are now eligible to vote. Voting ends January 25.

THE SYRENTHA SAVIO ENDOWMENT LAUNCHES SISTER WEBSITE

Longtime Jade Tree friend Mark Beemer founded in January 2002 to honor his wife, Syrentha, who lost her battle with breast cancer.

Because SSE is very involved within the punk rock community, was launched to enable bands to show that they care about social issues, while fans get a chance to own an exclusive piece of merchandise. The site will feature limited edition t-shirts from various bands to aide SSE in its efforts to provide funding for chemotherapy and other medication for underprivileged women who cannot afford the growing expense of fighting breast cancer. In addition to STRIKE ANYWHERE The Shirts For A Cure Project has exclusive designs available from Thursday, Thrice, Taking Back Sunday, Darkest Hour, and a barrage of others.

To date SSE has raised over $100,000 for breast cancer treatment.

While rummaging for skeletons in the back yard of co-owner Tim Owen’s Graylyn Crest estate, Jade Tree’s favorite feline Big Joe has unearthed some rare gems. No less than six releases from ‘back in the day’ have been found buried in a time capsule along with a few N.K.O.T.B. dolls. Check ‘em out!

Various Artists [I]Location Is Everything, Vol. 2[/I] Review

The über hip label Jade Tree’s second volume of its compilation series Location Is Everything Vol. 2 showcases the immense talents the label has amassed over the last few years. Featured artists include ex-Far frontman’s current labor of love Onelinedrawing, as well as old school hardcore courtesy of Kid Dynamite, and the sly pop rock of Jets to Brazil. There’s even a bonus section where unreleased tracks by bands like Pedro the Lion and Paint it Black are showcased for your listening pleasure. If you want to be in the know and score some points with both the hipsters and the hardcore kids, this is the disc to brush up on.

GET OUT AND VOTE!

To quote from the good folks at , "get out and vote, vote early, and don’t forget your ID. Whatever type of voting machines are being used, there’s no excuse for not getting out and casting your ballot. If your state allows early voting, take advantage of it. Ask about your employer’s Election Day leave policy – many states require companies to give their employees a chance to vote. If you have any problems at the polling place, call (866) OUR-VOTE, the Election Protection hotline."

If you need to find your polling place you can do so

VOTER REGISTRATION : UNDER THE RADAR AUCTION

With last night’s debate still fresh in our mind it is of the utmost importance to make sure that you register to vote as the deadline fast approaches across the country. If you need to research your state’s voter registration deadlines you can look or better yet if you haven’t already and you want to register now you can do so via this handy .

In keeping with this sentiment our friends at will be auctioning off artist signs from their recent protest issue. PEDRO THE LION along with cohorts Interpol, Death Cab For Cutie, Bright Eyes and countless others have handed over the signs from the magazine’s recent pictorial in order to help raise money and awareness for .

So remember voting absolutely counts. Nearly 50 million 18-30 year olds didn’t vote in 2000 and that election hinged on 537 votes. Get out and make a difference!

2004 CMJ & PHILLY SHOWCASES

Warning: implode() [function.implode]: Invalid arguments passed in /home/jadetree/public_html/news/wp-content/plugins/extension-bbcode/Extension BBcode Bata.php on line 175

CMJ is gearing up again and this year looks to be amazing. FROM ASHES RISE are coming out from Portland, THE LOVED ONES are making their Jade Tree debut, and DESPISTADO are driving all the way from Canada to rock your socks off. Any way you cut it, this is a stellar show with PAINT IT BLACK, THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES, and BREATHER RESIST rounding out the bill.

If that’s not enough, in addition to our CMJ showcase at CBGB we’ve decided to take advantage of our proximity to Philadelphia and launch a secondary bash at the First Unitarian Church. Both gigs promise to be to be killer, so if you live on the East Coast you really have no excuse but to head out and say hello…you really can’t go wrong.

JADE TREE VS. RELAPSE

As summer slowly fades and fall sets in across the country, our last dash attempts to claim softball glory seem few and far between. But on Saturday September 11th in a burst of sports genius, the entire staff of Jade Tree along with special assists Andy Mackie (Paint It Black), Teeter Sperber, and Paul Delaney (Kill Your Idols, None More Black) took off our safety gloves and challenged the bitches at to have it out once and for all.

The stage was set for a classic softball show down, lines were drawn and after hours of training and a few minutes of stretching Tim Owen, Darren Walters, David Wagenschutz, Mehron Moqtaderi, and iron mitt Charles Kaericher II took to the field. It seemed though that the sneaks in Relapse had a secret weapon brewing with promotion guru Carl Schultz and we simply could not find solid ground, giving up 9 runs in the first inning alone. A few highlights proceeded including Kaericher’s tasteful home run and Walter’s hilarious, seemingly pointless childbirth hitting stance, but when the sun set and the smoke cleared it was Relapse 24 & Jade Tree 10.

Now all we have are these video reminders and the knowledge that, unlike some labels, Team Jade Tree played by the rules and kept it clean!

Until next year….
