No More Dreams of Happy Endings

Right when you thought you’d figured out “the Jade Tree sound,” we decided to throw this lethal wrench into the machine and let the pieces fall where they may. Darkness, aggression, sheer adrenaline, and unapologetic muscular riffing sans the machismo sounded just about as good to you as it did to us, though, and DAMNATION‘S debut album managed to usher in an updated and skillfully corrupted version of a familiar sound through uncharted territory. We still can’t remember the last time we saw so many clean-cut kids banging their heads.

Misericordia

Going for a slightly modified approach than that of their debut album, DAMNATION AD gets straightforward and to the point with Misericordia (JT1025) – a collection of music that takes its cue from punk rock’s heaviest and iconoclastic pioneers, replacing their metallic sheen with raw power. Further evidence is tacked on to the CD version, where the band goes back to basics with four tracks recorded live for radio before proceeding to tackle a true-to-its-name rendition of the GBH classic “Maniac.”

Split

How two bands that are so drastically different can get together to share one piece of vinyl is still beyond us, but this record wasn’t exactly created to confer with anyone’s expectations. While WALLEYE offer up a friendly dose of finely crafted – albeit angst-ridden – pop-tinged punk, Washington D.C.’s DAMNATION A.D. obliterate their side of the platter in a brutal blast of metallic hardcore and unabashed noise. Which, of course, only goes to show that in the end, it’s all just punk rock anyway. (Also available as part of Jade Tree’s retrospective CD, The First Five Years (JT1050)
